The 11th Annual Conference on Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education

The ITiCSE 2006 conference will be held in Bologna, Italy, and hosted by the Università di Bologna. The Conference is sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE). The program will consist of invited lectures, working groups, tutorials, exhibits, a student poster competition, and technical sessions featuring papers, panels, posters, demonstrations, and tips & techniques sessions.

Location

Bologna, a historical capital of culture, was founded by the Etruscans in the VI century B.C. Bologna sits in the southern part of the historically and gastronomically famous Po River plain, a natural crossroads in northern Italy. Bologna's location was important not only for the trading of goods but also for the exchanging of ideas and the disseminating of culture. The Università di Bologna, founded in 1088, is the oldest university in the western world.

Bologna is famous for its porticoes. Dating back to the 12th century, porticoes were used to enlarge houses to support the growing University community. Today Bologna is home to 350,000, of which 100,000 are students. Bologna, Italy's culinary capital, is also famous for its food. Among the Bolognese contributions are tortellini, tagliatelle and mortadella. Furthermore, Bologna is surrounded by the famous food/wine regions of Parma, Modena, and Tuscany.

Bologna is very accessible, being served by an international airport and one of the main hubs of the Italian railway system. Within easy access is Florence (1 hour), Milan (1.5 hours), Venice (1.5 hours), Rome (2.4 hours) and the ubiquitous Italian countryside of Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany.

Call for Submission

The theme of the Conference will be Freedom in Teaching Computer Science. In June 1256, exactly 750 years before ITiCSE 2006, the Bologna Commune promulgated the Law of Paradise: all the slaves in the territory of Bologna were liberated. A revolutionary Law for that age. Freedom has several intersections with education: the freedom of teaching, freedom of learning, and education to liberate students to fulfill the promise of their talents.

ITiCSE traditionally accepts submissions on The use of technology in supporting computer science teaching and learning, the practice of teaching computer science and computer science education research and we welcome proposals in these areas within the theme.

Submission Guidelines

The official language of the conference is English, and all submissions must be original work. Full guidance on the style and format of submissions is available on the conference website, www.iticse06.cs.unibo.it.

Papers

Papers should be high quality, unpublished, original work related to a theme of the conference. Submissions must be full papers, limited to five pages. After blind review, accepted papers must be presented at the conference by a subset of the authors. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. A condition of this publication is an author signed ACM copyright release form.

Tutorials

Proposals are invited for tutorials that provide indepth coverage of a topic of interest to computing educators. A tutorial should provide a thorough and comprehensive exploration of a topic. Tutorials are either half-day (three hours) or full-day (six hours) and will be held the day before the conference. There is an additional fee for a conference attendee to participate in a tutorial.

Panels

Panel sessions provide a forum for the exploration of a hot topic among expert panel members and between the panel and the audience. The panel organizer must select appropriate panelists who agree to participate, obtain position statements from these panelists, and integrate the statements into the abstract before submitting the proposal. All accepted panel abstracts will be published in the conference proceedings.

Working Groups

Groups of 5-10 people with a common interest related to the conference theme, selected on the basis of their qualifications, will meet to work during ITiCSE 2006. Working group proposals are invited from potential leaders, and will be evaluated on the level of perceived interest in the suggested topic and the leader(s) qualifications. Working groups will commence activities electronically in April and will convene just before and during the conference to complete their deliberations. Each working group will present their results to the conference attendees, and after the conference submit a final report. The final reports will be reviewed and, if accepted, published in the SIGCSE Bulletin and the ACM digital library.

Demonstrations

Tips & Techniques

ITiCSE attendees have collectively a wealth of teaching experience. Practical ideas, a particular assignment, a pedagogical tool, a method of assessment, or class activity can be shared via the Tips & Techniques session: short presentations (about 10 minutes) which explain the goal, application, and results of each idea. Accepted proposals will also be supported by a one page summary in the proceedings.

Submission: 1 page idea summary by 20 March 2006 (US Hawaiian time)

Demonstrations of software used in classrooms and labs to support learning in computer science education are welcomed. Demonstrations could also be used when there is not enough time during a paper presentation to demonstrate support software fully. Demonstrations will be supported by a full page abstract that will appear in the proceedings.

Student Posters

Extended abstracts are invited for student posters. Each abstract should identify the problem, the approach taken and the results obtained. Special attention should be given to the uniqueness of the approach and the significance of the results. Submissions should conform to the spirit of the ACM Student Research Competition guidelines.

Posters

Work in progress may be submitted for presentation in poster format at the conference. Each poster will be supported by a one page abstract that will appear in the proceedings.
